Korg MR1000

Our main two track recorder. It records at double the SACD rate, namely 5.6Mhz/1 bit. Sounds very close to the stereo output of the console. We then convert the file in offline mode in any PCM format we choose for various “mix approval” scenarios. When it is time for mastering, we take the whole unit with us and plug it in front of the analog mastering chain, thus retaining the full quality and avoiding offline sample rate conversions. Only problem is that the unit has a fixed calibration point at -12dBFS, so it is easier to clip it. On the other hand, it helps not to drive the master bus too hard.

STATUS UPDATE: Unit no longer available. Exchanged it for the Oktava ML-17.
